Porterbrook Sponsors Railway Forum's Second Sustainable Development Seminar

11.11.03

Porterbrook is again sponsoring The Railway Forum's Sustainable Development Seminar which will take place in London on the 12 November 2003.

The seminar follows on from the first ground-breaking seminar held a year ago that resulted in a number of initiatives, including the industry wide agreement to publish a sustainable development statement.

Sustainable development lies at the heart of the case for rail. The SRA's Everyone's Railway the Wider Case for Rail highlights the contribution that rail makes to supporting our world-class economy, connecting communities and providing a healthy environment. All these are vital components of the sustainable development idea. They are the key contributions that every industry needs to make to guarantee national prosperity and social well-being, now, and for the future. Rail is the system of transport that, with its wide variety of roles, is frequently best placed to meet these challenges.

Much is going on across the industry to ensure that demanding sustainable development objectives are achieved. However, work still needs to be done and big challenges such as meeting increasingly stringent noise requirements, coping with the impact of climate change and controlling diesel emissions, will require the whole industry to work together.

Rupert Brennan Brown, Porterbrook's Head of Communications said

"Porterbrook is delighted to be sponsoring this important conference for the second year running. We fully support the principles of Sustainable Development and are delighted to help the Railway Forum bring together key industry players so that the industry can develop achievable Sustainable Development
objectives."
"Sustainable development underpins the case for rail"
says Adrian Lyons, Director General, The Railway Forum.
"Building on the success of last year's seminar, we are meeting again to consider a number of key issues. We have a record to be proud of but our railways need to continue to develop strategies to ensure we remain the most beneficial means of powered transport."
